An Alaskan Odyssey A Long Way Down A lifelong climber, seventeen-year-old Jordan spends as much time as he can scaling the crags outside his Washington hometown. His friend A.J., a fellow climber and popular super-jock, keeps the gorilla football players off Jordan's back, and his girlfriend Juana likes the crags as much as he does. All in all, Jordan's got a crimp hold on happiness. But even the tightest grip is useless if a piece of the rock breaks away. For the climber, there are only two absolutes in life gravity and death. Unfortunately, Jordan can't protect his friends from either.

A Mighty Wall eBook John Foley

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. As a former Outward Bound instructor, I thought Foley captured some of nuances that make wilderness expeditions with teens so captivating; throw in a murder-mystery and I couldn't put it down. Great read!!

A Mighty Wall eBook John Foley Reviews

I picked this book up at the local REI for half off and still paid too much! The only thing that kept me going were Mr. Foley's ridiculous climbing scenarios. To say "he did his research" is far fetched at best. For a YA reader who has never climbed in his/her life maybe the story would/could be entertaining, but for anyone who has done any rock climbing for any length of time, this book is a joke. From the opening childhood near miss, to climbing/working at a gym that sets 5.15 routes (really 5.15? the highest standard to date, a handful of ppl around the world climb at that level - and now apparently the locals in Everett as well), and mixing in climbing jargon where it really makes no sense.
I've been climbing here locally since moving here 10 years ago. When I saw this book I thought it would be a fun read. Local author, local crags, local gyms, etc. But what I got was a book by an author who knew nothing of it's core topic.
Maybe the overall theme of the story is fine, but if you are a climber it's hard to get past Mr. Foley's attempt to describe our sport.
What if you fell to your death while doing something you love? That's the risk you take, of course. But, what if you lived, but your best friend died? And, you saw it happen? And, everyone in your school hated you, and blamed you for his death?

John Foley has done his research (he is not a rock-climber), as he tells the story of seventeen year-old Jordan and his climbing experiences both in a gym and in the wild. The story is set in the north-west, where the Cascades offer hiking and climbing opportunities for those who wish to challenge themselves. There is male-friendship, loss of life, finding love, sex, then losing love, high-school politics, bullies and fights, beer and getting sick, road-trips, camping, hiking with mom, and much more.

If you like rock-climbing, then read this book.
Jordan Woods has been climbing since he was six. His body makes him an ideal climber, but it also makes him a target for bullies. Luckily, during his freshman year, he becomes friends with Casey and A.J., two football players. Life is pretty good, and during his junior year, he meets Juana, a female climber, and they instantly hit it off. Unfortunately, happiness can only last so long...

I enjoyed A Mighty Wall. It's pretty obvious as to what is going to happen to end Jordan's happiness, but knowing this detail only made the novel slightly less enjoyable. For a long time, I was just waiting for it to happen, and I even became a little impatient. The greatest strength in A Mighty Wall were the characters. I loved the major and minor characters. All of them were incredibly realistic. The only characters I disliked were the ones I was supposed to dislike like Briggs who bullied Jordan. Another strength was the humor. Without some humor, the novel would have gotten dull.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. As a former Outward Bound instructor, I thought Foley captured some of nuances that make wilderness expeditions with teens so captivating; throw in a murder-mystery and I couldn't put it down. Great read!!
