SOME SECRETS CAN KILL YOU...

Kazuma Tetsu is a technomancer—one of the rare people who can manipulate the Matrix without technology, using only the power of their mind. But he’s on a more personal mission—he’s searching for his missing sister, Hitori. Following her trail leads him into a tangled web of corp execs, mercenaries, and double-crossing rogues—usually just another day in the Sixth World.

But as Kazuma digs deeper, he uncovers a plot that could bring about the end of the world. Upon seeing a simulation of the Resonances Realms accessible to technomancers, an A.I. declares it will use the realms to ascend to a higher plane of consciousness. The intelligence’s goal seems impossible, until an imprisoned and manipulated group of technomancers accesses dissonance to open a gateway to a new realm—possibly the heaven the A.I. seeks. But opening this dissonant hole in the Matrix could trigger global disaster, and it’s up to a team of shadowrunners, including a couple of denizens of the fabled JackPoint, to free the trapped technomancers and stop the Dark Resonance before it destroys the entire Matrix—and worse …

Shadowrun Dark Resonance eBook Phaedra Weldon

I'll start with the good. A number of the Matrix Jackpointers are in this so you get to see their personalities & conflict! Downside is Slamm-o! is either getting a major facelift or the author didn't do their homework. He's a fat dude with black dreadlocks but described as a guy with spiky blonde hair. The other upside to this book is Phaedra does an excellent job at describing the characters using AR windows and making the Matrix a very visual place. The Jackpointers & visual matrix earned it 2 stars.

The story itself is exceptionally slow, shallow, and reads like a player character's backstory. While the creator might love their PC's back story, it is a bore to the rest of us. There is a missed opportunity here for a lot of colorful descriptions. Several of the technomancers are submerged and while the author tells us what echo they took there is no mention of the Resonance Realms they went into. Did they explore the Crooked House or pull knowledge from the Endless Archive? Declaring they are submerged and took X echo reminds me of a player spending their 23 karma for their next progression & bragging of their new mechanical boon while completely ignoring the character development resulting from experiencing a psychological trial to further their connection to the datasphere. Most of the characters lack interesting flaws which would make them relatable. They are all in shape, attractive (mostly elves), and highly capable people who can do anything.

In conclusion this reads like a sluggish summary of some one's home game campaign rather than a story set in an elabroate ttrpg world. For anyone looking to learn about Shadowrun try one of the other books first. Come back around to this one when you want a book that highlights how visual the Matrix is.

Shadowrun Dark Resonance eBook Phaedra Weldon Reviews

Good solid genre piece, fit very well with canoniacal lore of shadowrun.
Been awhile sciences I read shadowrun book but they still as good as I remembered .
Got little lost in time line of the universe but as I said before been bit since I read any shadowrun novels
Good story with engaging characters, the technomancer centric storyline was well done, it was great to hear about sprite interaction and temperament.
This is an excellent story, told in the traditional Shadowrun style. A technomancer is searching for his missing sister, and uncovers clues which lead him to discover a far larger conspiracy than he had imagined. Runner teams, megacorporations, the cops, and even some SR celebrities are involved in his search for the truth. Very enjoyable, with a few surprises inside. Highly recommended!
I deeply enjoyed this book, and it's author did a splendid job keeping up with several established characters points of view while not losing me and keeping the narative going. The story itself is exciting and grim, a dark presence hunting and harvesting technomancers for a twisted scheme. and includes appearences by several of my favorite Jackpoint posters as major characters which was great icing on the cake. A few things happen in the novel that will end up being history in the tabletop role-playing game's ongoing history, a plus for storytellers!

If your unfamiliar with Shadowrun, this will still be a good read for you, the story stands on it's own with enough exposition to keep you informed about the needed background bits, but not enough to bog down. The Shadowrun wiki is always available for reference, of course! It's a good cyberpunk scifi story with some magic elements thrown in.
Most novels based on RPGs, videogames etc are usually B-grade books. Not bad in itself, because sometimes that all you want. When I picked this up, that's all I expected.

At best, this publication is okay. I got about halfway through it and did not feel emotionally invested in the characters. I simply did not feel that many of them had much personality for me to care about them. This hurts the mystery/conspiracy plot aspect of the novel. Yes, if a character falls victim to conspiracy that is definitely a suspenseful moment... if I like that character first.

Writing style also made it difficult to understand the physical settings the characters were in, which is important when half the time the characters are in the Matrix.
This book was a good can't quit turning the pages thrill ride for me. I love the Shadowrun universe and have read many many pages of fiction set in it. This one was about Technomancers, one of the newest additions to the world and I really don't know much about them or how they work in the game so I was hoping this would be accessible to me and it was. There was enough information presented in the story to keep me up with what was going on without it bogging down the action. I like character driven stories no matter what the genre and the characters in here were people I was interested in and what happened to them mattered enough to keep me reading. There's some nice twists and turns, some very scary stuff and I really wouldn't mind a bit seeing any of these people in more stories in the future!
